PROMISE

The University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine recently hosted PROMISE Week (June 16–20), welcoming students who have earned early assurance admission through the Promoting Recruitment Opportunities in Medicine with Individual Study Experiences (PROMISE) Program. The program is designed for college sophomores from educationally and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. It offers a direct pathway to medical school based on criteria established by the Office of Admissions Executive Committee.

Throughout the week, students gained firsthand exposure to the life of a medical student through physician shadowing, hands-on activities, and presentations by faculty and staff. They also learned valuable strategies for preparing for medical school and for building relationships with physicians, mentors, and current medical students.

A significant event during the week was the PROMISE Dinner, where keynote speaker Dr. Jasmine Kency shared her inspiring medical journey in medicine/pediatrics. Attendees also heard from Dr. Jessie Harvey, associate professor of medicine, who described her daily duties and led hands-on activities in intubation and CPR. Dr. Derrick Burgess offered students insights into his work as an orthopedic surgeon. One of this year's new initiatives, led by Dr. Nathan Tullos, provided students with guidance on how to approach medical school versus undergraduate studies, including exams, study tips, and time management, and emphasized the importance of asking questions and using effective study strategies.

This year’s PROMISE Week welcomed 32 students from eight colleges and universities, including three community colleges. Although each student brought a unique background and perspective, they shared a common goal of attending medical school and becoming a physician.

The PROMISE Program appreciates the leadership of Dr. Loretta Jackson-Williams and Dr. Demondes Haynes, whose ongoing support helps make PROMISE Week a significant event. The program demonstrates the School of Medicine’s dedication to nurturing future physicians and increasing opportunities for talented students throughout Mississippi.
